Reading is fun

Our homeschool co-op is doing a 21 day reading challenge. Please understand that I have two children, one of whom detests reading. Unless it is Diary of a Wimpy Kid, he usually refuses to read it.

My daughter loves to read and is very good at it. Griffin is also an excellent reader, he just doesn’t enjoy it. He gets that from his Dad. David told me, not too long ago, that he hadn’t read anything for pleasure, ever.

Yesterday we learned that we are doing this 21 day reading challenge. We are supposed to take a fourth of a piece of paper for each book, write the title and author or the book on it and then draw a picture, if they want to. Bella has read 11 books so far and drawn a picture for all of them. Griffin read a chapter book, 2 magazines and 6 easy readers today. He also drew pictures for each one. Bella is still going strong reading. At the end of the 21 days, all of the participants will bring their sheets of paper with the books on them. We are going to lay them side by side to see how many books were read. I think the kids will be amazed at how many books were read during this time. The library is sure going to thank us. We’ve visited two different ones in the last two days and checked out 83 books and magazines.

Griffin got tired of reading and asked if he could stop. He had read for over 2 hours so I said, Sure, you’ve done enough for today. Instead of asking to watch TV or play video games, he said, “I think I’ll make a comic strip.” I was very surprised. So, for the last hour he has been writing a comic strip about a penguin who runs a coffee shop.

I love being home with my kids. God has blessed my life beyond measure. image

When i asked what their favorite book from today, This was their responses.

Bella loved “What do smurfs do all day? I love the smurfs. It’s so funny to see my kids reading about my all time favorite cartoon imageas a child.

Griffin’s favorite thing was Nick Magazine. The issues is one with spongebob square pants in it. I love the fact that my kids can read anything they like, not just what a teacher assigns them.

I can’t imagine if I could only read on my level, or what someone else thinks I would enjoy. Griffin actually said today that he enjoyed reading when he got to pick out the books. Now I just have to keep track of all of the library books and makes sure they get back on time. Library fines. . . . now that’s a whole ‘nother topic.

What is your child reading today? Please share with me.

Read Aloud Thursday

A fellow Crew TOS crew mate has a meme on her blog called Read Aloud Thursday. You can see it on her blog. It is where you discuss what books you and your family are reading. Hopefully next week I can do a better job but this week I am just going to list what we are reading. I have been on the computer entirely too much today! LOL

As a family we are reading The Cabin Faced West by Jean Fritz. We are starting to study Early American History and this is a classic.

This is the story of Ann Hamilton who was very lonely in her new life out west. She longed for her life back in Gettysburg-until a stranger rode into Hamilton Hill and changed her life forever. We are on Chapter 4 and read a chapter every night

before bed.

Bella is reading Little Critters Book Read-It-yourself Storybook. This is a great read aloud for beginner readers. She is progressing great in her new reading program. I am so proud of her.

Griffin is reading Diary of A Wimpy Kid, again.

I am anxiously awaiting Nicolas Sparks' new book, The Last Song. I have loved all of his books. This came out a couple of weeks ago but I am waiting for it to come in at the library. Hopefully by next Thursday I will be able to tell you about this one. In the meantime I am reading Deeply, Madly Manhattan by Nora Roberts.

My husband doesn't like to read but he will read every once in awhile to the kids at night. He's mad at us right now though cuz we made fun of his owl sounds when he read the other night. Still trying to get him to forget about that. It's not a good idea to laugh when your spouse reads to the kids if you want him to continue.

I look forward to seeing what everyone else is reading. Thanks Amy for telling me about this great meme.
