Critical Thinking – TOS review

image

I received a copy of Balance Benders from the company Critical Thinking Co.. I had seen some of their workbooks at our homeschool conference but honestly had never thought about buying them.

I headed over to their website at criticalthinking.com and started looking at all that they offer. Immediately I looked at the mission statement because I like to see what a company is all about. I was impressed from the get go.

The Critical Thinking Co.™ is committed to developing children's critical thinking skills for better grades, higher test scores, and success in life. We do not teach through drill and memorization or teach to the tests—we empower the mind!

Wow, who doesn’t want their child’s mind empowered?

The Balance Benders series is meant for kids in grades 2-6. It is part of the critical thinking line and is used specifically to introduce algebraic skills and deductive thinking using balance puzzles. When I told Griffin I had a puzzle book for him to try was pretty excited. When I showed it to him he said “Huh”. I guess this wasn’t the kind of puzzles he was looking for. I personally looked at them and couldn’t figure out the very first one so I wasn’t expecting much out of him. I told him to just give them a try, not to get frustrated, and let me know what he thinks. I went in the kitchen to finish supper and about 30 minutes later he handed me the book and said, “That was easy”. He had finished the entire workbook. I never thought to tell him not to write in it because the company allows you to photocopy this for use in your family. I really didn’t think he would do any of it. Boy was I surprised. The concept of the book is compared to Sudoku (which I also don’t understand). There are 6 answers and you pick three that will always be true.

image

After he said he did the whole book, I figured he just picked three and didn’t even look at them. Nope, he got everyone one right. Not that I would have known, but the answers are included in the back.

So, I guess this was a hit for us. Griffin has always been excellent at math but this has made me realize I probably have not been expecting as much of him as I should. To me, this seems a little above the beginning age range of second grade. Maybe if you have been using a logic program before this, it would be doable; but it just seems a little much for a second or third grader.

Critical Thinking Co. has a lot of different workbooks that look really good. My favorite was the Language Arts series. You can order the workbooks individually or they also offer software bundles that allow you to get their best selling products by grade range at a 10% discount.

image image

The Mind Benders Beginning workbook is priced at $9.99 each. I have always thought that workbooks were a waste of money because once you write in them they can’t be used again. This company fixes that with allowing you to photocopy them. I also like the software option which would allow me to only print what I need a little at a time.

If you would like to try this before you buy, you can find over 30 software demos and hundreds of samples on the website. The company also offers a money back guarantee which is always appreciated at our house. It is really hard to tell if something is going to work for your family and this allows us to purchase without fear of wasting valuable resources on things that don’t work.

I also received a copy of the catalog. I love looking at homeschool catalogs but it does make me want everything. It says on the outside that they are offering free shipping on orders of $50 or more through April 31, 2010. Just enter the code CTA22.

I recommend going to their website and checking out all they offer. Don’t limit yourself to my opinion. Please check out what the other crew members have to say about this company.

I think the president of the company, Michael Baker, sums up education beautifully by saying

“If we teach children everything we know, their knowledge is limited to ours. If we teach children to think, their knowledge is limitless.”

I think I’ll print that out and hang it on the wall in our school room.

** Please note that I received a free copy of Balance Benders in exchange for my honest opinion in this review. No other compensation was provided.

Thank you TOS and Critical Thinking Co. for this opportunity.

Homeschool in the Woods – TOS review

image I was given a download version of Homeschool in the Woods which included The United States and Olde World Maps as part of the TOS crew. I love to be able to have any map available to print out whenever I need them was wondering what I would use first. Then I remembered that we were going to be studying Ancient Greece in history. I quickly found the map I was looking for that included Crete and printed101_4864 one out for each of my children. They both enjoyed coloring the very detailed pictures. They also liked comparing the old maps to the current ones. They easily found the countries on the current maps. We choose to print these with the countries labeled but you can also choose a no label version. I also love that I can print only the copies I need. This helps me to not waste paper and ink. 101_4865

The next map we are going to print and use is a blank version of the US map. The kids are learning where all of the states are and this will be great to help learn their locations. This is an example of when we will need several copies to allow them time to learn all 50 states and their locations. It is great that we don’t have to pay more for extra copies.

The world map set includes more than 130 maps plus notebooking pages.

The United States map set includes over 180 maps and even more notebooking pages. All of these are hand illustrated and beautifully done. Have a look at the free samples online that they offer. You can also see other downloads that they offer on their website at www.homeschoolinthewoods.com. One thing I really like is their timeline figures. If you are tired of searching for figures to add to any timeline you use, you will find beautiful ones at Homeschool in the Woods. You can get them printed or on a CD.

Olde World Style Maps are available for $18.95 each as a downloaded product or $28.95 as a combination pack. You may also choose to purchase as a CD for $29.95 or $19.95 each.

Please check out what the other crew members have to say about Homeschool in the Woods.

** Please note that I received a free copy of these maps in exchange for my honest opinion in this review. No other compensation was provided. Thank you Homeschool in the Woods and TOS for this opportunity.

Grapevine Studies – Old Testament Review

image

I have always wanted to really understand the Bible. Even though I was baptized as a teenager and try to live a life that is pleasing to God; I have never truly understood many parts of the Bible. My first thought when I looked over this curriculum for the first time was, “I’m going to learn so much right along with my children.” A personal relationship with Jesus Christ is my main goal for both of my kids. I feel that this Bible curriculum is going to help me attain this goal. I love the idea of learning by using stick figure drawings in order to remember key points of the Bible.

Grapevine is a Bible study curriculum that stimulates your childs imagination. It does this through the use of stick figure drawing and timelines. I think this is a unique way to engage your child in learning about the Bible. It is for ages 5 through adult and has many different levels which you can see on their website here.

We choose the Old Testament Level 1 in the e-book format. It is available for $25.95 and has 50 lessons. You can also choose the regular book format. You will need the student book and the teachers book no matter which one you choose. My kids and I have learned so much during the short time we have been doing this curriculum. They have asked every day when we are doing our bible study. Even though they already had learned about creation they loved learning it in more detail with the timeline and drawings. My son loves to draw and had a very easy time copying the pictures. I drew the figures on a whiteboard for them in the colors that the teacher’s edition suggests. My daughter, who is 6, had a harder time with the figures but still really liked doing this. She is a perfectionist and wanted her drawings to look just like mine.

This has made including bible study in our homeschool day very easy. One of the best things about it is that they learn so much in so very little time. I have to admit that the first day I didn’t read the suggested daily schedule and we did a weeks worth the first day. The kids didn’t even complain but I was beginning to think it was going to be too much. Good thing I eventually read the directions and it made it much easier. Their suggested schedule is as follows:

Day 1: Timeline and memory verse review page.
Day 2: Complete page one of the lesson.
Day 3: Complete page two of the lesson.
Day 4: Create the character and event card and review their memory verse for that lesson. Level 2 students will also continue with their memory work found at the bottom of the page.

Grapevine Studies mission is to provide believers the tools they need to know God's word and disciple others. With our teaching method and Bible curriculums parents and teachers can effectively disciple their children and students so that they are equipped to reach the world with the truth of the Gospel.

We also received the Birth of Jesus to review and though we haven’t been able to finish it; we are looking forward to having a Christmas in September party at the end of this 5 lesson study. This one is a multi-level study for ages 7 to adult. This would be great for a bible study around Christmas time for a church group or Sunday School. This is very affordable at $6.95 for the student book and $8.95 for the teacher’s book for the ebook version.

image This is a product that I would highly recommend for your homeschool curriculum. Don’t just take my word for it, check out what the other crew members have to say about this here.
