Math Tutor educational software series offers math DVD’s for every level. We received two of their DVD’s to review as part of the TOS crew. You can order the items I received and many more by visiting their website at www.mathtutor.com or order directly by calling (800) 521-4518.
The first item we received was Young Minds: Numbers and Counting. This reminds me of Baby Genius videos that are popular with small children. This is a DVD that is perfect for preschool age children. This is a 35 minute video that introduces your child to the numbers 1-10. What is really nice about this is that it is set to classical music. In 1993 a study revealed that college students' scores improved on spatial-temporal reasoning tests after listening to Mozart, Studies also show that small children remember things better when they are put to classical music.
This video not only has beautiful music, the pictures are beautiful also. I love this picture of baby birds waiting for their food. There are also bonuses that allow your child to connect the dots, do puzzles and guess the animal picture. This video is available for $19.99. This would be great to let your preschooler watch while you are spending one on one time with an older student. You can watch a short video clip to see what this DVD offers.
The second item that we received is The Basic Math Word Problem Tutor DVD . There are 2 DVD’s that are an 8 hour video course that covers the following:
- Adding Whole Numbers
- Subtracting Whole Numbers
- Multiplying Whole Numbers
- Dividing Whole Numbers
- Adding Decimals
- Subtracting Decimals
- Multiplying Decimals
- Dividing Decimals
- Adding Fractions
- Subtracting Fractions
- Multiplying Fractions
- Dividing Fractions
- Percents
- Ratio and Proportion
My 11 year old son started watching this and didn’t like it. He watched the adding part and it was below his level so I think we will benefit more from the multiplication section and all of the topics following that. This DVD helps students learn how to work word problems by understanding certain word clues. I know that word problems were a problem for me when I was in school so I think this will be good for my kids. The video is divided into eight parts so you can skip to the portion that you need to work on. Jason Gibson is the instructor on this video and he does a great job of showing step by step instructions in each topic. This video is available for $26.99 and is a lot cheaper than hiring a tutor if your student is having problems understanding word problems.
Please note that I received these DVD’s at no charge in exchange for my honest opinion in this review. No other compensation was provided.

My older two did think the DVD got better as he got into things a bit more complicated than basic addition and subtraction. My oldest actually seriously seemed to be paying attention in the multiplying & dividing fractions sections. Just so you know, you are right... it does get more advanced :)
