Read Aloud Thursday

image

I’m sitting at the kitchen table while supper is cooking.  I wanted to be sure to get my post in for this weeks Read Aloud Thursday cuz I’m super excited about the books we have been reading this week.   As I’ve said before, I work at our local library part time (very part time) but I never get tired of looking at books.  I love them!  This past week we went to 3 different libraries and not one of them was the one in our town.  I have always wanted to start doing this and I am so glad that we did.   I love looking at the children’s selections that each library chooses.   But, enough about that, let’s get to the books.

Bella is reading valentine books right now so I thought I’d tell you about her favorite one. image The title is Queen of Hearts by Mary Engelbreit.   We picked this one up at the Williamsburg Library which is about 20 miles away from where we live.  The only bad thing about this library is that all of the branches in that county have put away all toys due to the swine flu scare.  Library books are great but they don’t keep my kids entertained for long so I didn’t get to spend as much time here as I would have liked.  It also didn’t help that David came with us and he HATES to read.

In this book Ann Estelle (love her name) puts her all into making a really cool valentine box.  She works so hard she forgets to make Valentines for her friends.  Read this one to find out how she rights this terrible day.

I asked Griffin what the best book he was reading right now and he said his Pokemon Guide.  Not exactly what I meant but I guess if it’s his favorite it deimageserves a spot on here.   This is called Pokemon, Ultimate Handbook and tells all of the pokemon characters and what their moves are.  This book gets a lot of use in our house because Griffin really enjoys Pokemon.  He has over 300 trading cards and several of the games.

For David, as I said before, he doesn’t read for pleasure but he did look at a medical book while we were at the library the other day.  It was a huge medical guide for your home.  I’m not sure if this is the correct picture but it is close.  imageIt kept him busy for almost an hour.  Personally I don’t like these kind of books because I seem to have all of the symptoms when I read things like this.

Now for what I have been excited to tell all about.  David and I have started the Love Dare image challenge (for the second time).     This book is taken from the movie Fireproof.  We watched this at our church when it first came out of DVD and we both felt it was life altering.    The book is great.  I read it when we tried it before, I just didn’t do it.  :)  We got to day 3 before we gave up.  This time I am determined to do better.   I think we have a pretty good marriage but obviously it can be improved if we couldn’t succeed in this challenge the first time.  The first day alone is hard.   You have to promise to have patience and not say anything negative to your spouse.    I have had to stop several times today when I started to say something negative.    So, pray for us to finish this dare.  We’re going to need it.

The other book that I am reading is Raising unselfish children in a self image absorbed world by Jill Rigby.    This has been a real eye opener for me.  Not that I don’t know my kids are spoiled.  It is just that I needed reminded that giving in to their every whim is not good for them, or me.  If America doesn’t change the way we are raising our children, we are going to have a whole country of adults that no one wants to be around in 10-15 years.    This has also helped me see that I am a very materialistic person.  That is not how I want to be perceived so I going to work on that.

Gosh, I have a lot to work on.  Not to mention dinner is burning.

Til next week, Happy Reading.

Don’t forget to check out what everyone else is reading over at Hope is the Word where this meme is hosted.

I didn't even know Mary Engelbreit had a Valentine's book, Lori. Thanks for reviewing it. I'd like to look for it.

I have a great marriage, but started reading The Love Dare and discovered how much of me needed changing! Godspeed to you and David on your journey through the book.

I haven't seen that Mary Engelbreit book, either. I always buy my mom a ME calendar for Christmas every year. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for that one.

I hear you on the medical book, too! It's amazing how easy it is to self-diagnose when you're not even sick! :-)

So glad you played this week!!
