See the Light – TOS review

Product:  See the Light Art class – 36 lessons on DVD

Company:  See the Light

Cost:  $99

Website:  www.seethelightshine.com

My children are both fairly good at drawing.  They get that from my husband, not me.  They were really happy when I told them we would be getting a DVD  from See the Light as part of the TOS crew.

I love the idea of an art curriculum that focuses on Christ.  That is what See the Light is.  I received a CD with the first four classes in this curriculum to try as part of the TOS crew.     This art curriculum is brought to you by master artist Pat Knepley.

I knew that the kids would enjoy this because they love to draw.  I didn’t realize how much they would like it.  The CD contains the first 4 lessons.  There are 36 total which is meant to be a year’s worth of the curriculum.   My kids did all four lessons in one day.   You can get the same DVD by filling out the form here.    Oh yeah, the first DVD is free!!  What a great way to try this art curriculum with no commitment at all.  You can also preview 3 lessons on the internet at no cost.    The DVD contains 2 bonus lessons on chalk drawings that are really cool.

See the Light is a Christian company that has found a way to put drawing and art history together with a biblical focus.   The master artist is Pat Knepley and my kids loved the way she taught.   She explained the techniques very well.

My kids favorite thing was learning about shading.  I saw Bella practicing holding her pencil different ways to master shading while she was watching television.

There are a couple of different ways that you can purchase See the Light art curriculum.  You can buy the 9 DVD’s for $99.  If you would rather not buy them all at once, you can do a monthly membership where you get 4 lessons a month for $10.   This offers a savings of 10% but I know my kids would be disappointed to have to wait until the next month to continue.   If you were going to do only one lesson a week (which is what is recommended) this would be okay.

Griffin loved one of the pictures on the DVD and drew it for practice.   I told him he just needed to practice the hands.  This was not something that was assigned on the DVD but he wanted to try it.  I love to see my kids enjoying their school work and this art curriculum was so much fun for them.

The 9 DVD’s in this are meant to cover a traditional school year of art.   Each lesson is supposed to take approximately 15 minutes.  I like that there are follow up activities for your student if you would like to do additional work on the topic.

There also isn’t a lot you have to buy to use See the Light.  Most lessons require only a piece of paper, a #2 pencil and a good eraser.

There are never any workbooks.  My kids enjoyed this because it adds in a different learning medium (the television) than they usually use.  I think they think that if they are watching TV they really aren’t learning.   (Just don’t tell that to the creators of Sesame Street, huh?)

See the Light also offers other DVD’s that you can view here.

I think the price is a little expensive but because my kids enjoyed it so much, I would say it is worth the investment.   I know this is one thing I wouldn’t have to beg them to do.

Lori,

We also enjoyed reviewing this product. Griffin did a great job w/drawing his picture. It looks like you have a budding artist in the midst.
