Vocabulary Cartoons – TOS Review

image When I was little one of my favorite books was one that had special riddles that helped you learn the states and capitals.   The one that I really remember is a group of kids standing saying “Juneau (Do you know) the capital of our state?  The other little kid said, “No, but I’ll ask ya (Alaska).  I have never forgotten this.

imageWhen I received the Vocabulary Cartoons book, it reminded me of the book I had when I was young.  I knew that it really helped me to remember the states and capitals so I was excited that I had found a book to help my kids remember vocabulary words.  The website states, “Learn a word a minute and never forget it.”

Vocabulary Cartoons is a really neat book that uses mnemonics  as memory aides to help you remember the definition of vocabulary words.  A mnemonic is a device that helps you remember something by associating what you are trying to remember with something you already know.   I received the Elementary version that costs $12.95.    It is recommended for grades 3-6.   It includes 210 vocabulary words that they state every grammar student should know.  It also includes quizzes with matching and fill in the blank questions to help reinforce the learning process.

imageWe used the book with Griffin who is 11 years old.  The first page is the word abduct.  It gives a “sounds like” for each word that then has a memorable picture to help remember the word.  For abduct it has the phrase" “abducted ducks”.  There is a picture of a thief running with two ducks under his arms that he abducted.   Even though Griffin thought the pictures were silly, he remembered all of the definitions.   It seems like the funnier the picture, the more he remembered it.   He wasn’t begging to do the words each day, but neither did he complain.

This book is a good way to reinforce vocabulary memory for your student.  You can see more samples by visiting this page.   You can also see the other books offered by Vocabulary Cartoons by visiting the website at www.vocabularycartoons.com
