Yep, we got another game to review. This one is imagecalled Nature Nuts and it is the expansion set for the board game Wise Alec.

This is is a picture of the expansion set we received.  It can also be used as a travel game.  The case is very sturdy so I think it would hold up for travel.  But, the cards are kind of flimsy.  My kids have already bent a few while playing.

The object of the game is to become the Wise Alec.  This is very educational and helps the kids (and adults) learn tons of things about nature.  Before starting, you will need a pencil to keep track of points.  You also need to decide how many points you want the goal to be.  There is a dice (I always hate calling it a die even though I know that is the correct form of the word.) The dice has colors instead of numbers.  The colors correspond to the four different types of cards.  There is Earth, Plants and Animals and Wise Alec (which is purple).  Each card has an easier question which is worth 3 points and a harder one that is worth 7.  We had the player to the right of us read the question.  If you answer correctly, you get the corresponding amount of points.  Easy enough, right?

If you roll a purple, you may have to do an exercise, a tongue twister or brainteasers.  There are also win/lose points cards.  My kids liked these the best.

Now, I’ve always thought I was fairly intelligent.  Not overly smart, but certainly capable of playing a child’s game of trivia.  Trivial pursuit used to be my favorite game and I have to admit, I rocked at it. No one wanted to play cuz I always won.  Well, Wise Alec, has proven me wrong.  I had a hard time answering more questions than I care to say.  Some of the three point ones even.  My kids actually knew more than me.  I guess that means I’m doing a good job of teaching them.

My friend came over and watched the kids for me while I went with my mom during her surgery.  When I came home, everyone was sitting on the floor laughing and playing this game.  She, too, was amazed at what she didn’t know.  She said that they loved the game even though it was difficult.  The age range is recommended for 8 and up and it is for 2-6 players.  Younger kids can play but be ready to give some clues so they have a fair chance.

There are two other expansion sets to go with the Wise Alec Game.  They are Civilize this and Sports Buffs.  I am thinking about getting Civilize This for my kids to go along with their history this year because we are learning about early civilizations.

image Griddly Games also has other educational games that look great.

Nature Nuts seem to be a great way to learn about science while having a good time.  We enjoy games at our house so this has been a big hit.  We even just use the cards to ask each other questions during dinner.  Maybe when we get through the cards, I’ll do better the second time around.  LOL

The game comes with the die, 200 cards and the heavy cardboard case with magnetic closure.

The only negative thing I have to say about the game is that the dice is rather cheap with just stickers on it for the color circles.  Ours are already beginning to peel off and the colors are fading from much use.  I’m sure my kids hands were not overly clean when they used it so this may have something to do with the colors coming off.  I may try to put clear finger nail polish over the stickers to keep them from coming all the way off.

You can see a list of retailers that sell this online here.  The prices vary.  I saw it on Amazon for as low as $9.15 but most places it is around $14.95.   There is also a list of stores that have the games on the website.

This card game has won several awards and we definitely enjoyed it.

We are liking all of the games we are getting this year on the TOS crew.  Look for more reviews of our goodies we have received coming soon.
