Science is something that usually get’s put off in our house.  We seem to do so much in our day to day life that I feel like there are more important things to get to. We do nature walks every week.  We are  always talking about weather, bugs, trees and everything else in our world.  My kids love experiments and are always coming up with something to try.

This year I vowed to add more science to our curriculum.  Well, here it was March and we had done a lot of experiments but no real curriculum.  I was so excited when I was chosen to review Considering God’s Creation.  I had looked at this last year and just put off getting it.

My favorite thing about this curriculum is that it is based on the Bible.  I don’t mind some of our school stuff being secular but I feel like science should definitely be a subject that includes God.  I fail to see how someone can think our amazing world just came to be through a big bang.

I received the two paperback books that include a student’s and a teacher’s edition along with a CD of song’s.  I think the price is amazing for what you get.  It is $29.95 for all of this.  Another great thing is that you have permission to copy the student book for your family’s use.   This is a great money saver if you have more than one student.

It is recommended for 2nd through 7th grade.  The student’s book is over 270 black and white pages.   When they are finished with the curriculum they will have compiled a notebook of their student pages to always remember what they have learned.   Your students will learn by easy to follow lessons (easy for the parent too), vocabulary words, creative experiments, bible studies that go along with the topic and lots of extra ideas.

The creator’s of Considering God’s Creation are Sue Moritmer and Betty Smith who state that they are first and foremost Christians, wives and mothers. They were both homeschooled and missionary kids in Mexico.   The program was created for their own children.   It is a unique approach to natural science.    The activities are simple but fun and engaging.

The first topic is Creation which is fitting since everything began with creation.   100_7401

This shows the kids doing the first pages.  This page (on the right) is called Not by Chance.  It included all of the aspects of creation that were discussed.  The kids then had to mix them up and see if they could get them in the right order without looking.  This showed them how God had the ultimate hand in creating our universe.  Not once did they get one picture in the right place.  They learned that there was a one in over 3 million chance that they would get all 10 correct.  I’ll pick God over those odds any day.   They told everyone we saw for days after that about this project.  It was so simple but left a lasting impression.

The remaining topics covered in the curriculum are :

  • Universe
  • Stars
  • Solar System
  • Earth
  • Light
  • Sound
  • Wind
  • Weather
  • Clouds
  • Rocks
  • Plants
  • Insects
  • Mammals
  • Reptiles
  • Birds
  • Fish
  • Amphibians
  • Food Chains
  • Reproduction and Genetics
  • Human
  • Animal Anatomy
  • Physiology

Our favorite one so far is The Universe which covers stars, the sun and planets.    We had fun making a way to view the constellations inside.  This was another project that was easy and fun.

Our box was a little big but it still worked great.  The kids guessed the names of the constellations and then made up their own names for them also.     We love to go on field trips related to what we are learning.  For the universe portion we visited the Air Force Museum in Dayton, OH for their Space night.  The kids were able to meet four astronauts, look at stars through a huge telescope, and had fun learning more about space.

We also really enjoyed the weather chapter.  My kids are terrified of storms and this really helped explain how and why weather occurs.  We visited the Museum of Natural History and saw the movie “Storm

Chasers” at the Imax.  The kids even got to get inside the tornado interceptor vehicle and get their picture taken with the star of the show.   They loved seeing things that go along with their school studies and it helps them remember so much more than just reading.

Considering God’s Creation is great because you can go at your own speed and take longer on certain subjects if you are really interested in them.  It is designed for a one year study but could easily be stretched into two by adding the suggested ideas in Digging Deeper.  This includes books to explore, extra worksheet ideas and movies that help you to “dig deeper” into the topic.

If you are looking for a multi-level science curriculum that covers all of creation, I highly suggest Considering God’s Creation

The only drawback we had was that the kids thought the songs were funny on the CD.  This was to the point that we couldn’t even hardly listen to them for them laughing.   But, I do have to say that they were singing them long after we turned off the CD player so they are definitely memorable.  You can listen to a sample here.   It is on the right side of the page at the top.   There are also sample worksheet pages to view on that same page.

This one is going to make it into my Top 10 reviews of the year and it may even be number 1.
